Garlic Hummus Heals

Bad breath is not something anyone likes to have. But sometimes (only sometimes), the cause of it, is soooo well worth it. After all, you can chew gum, eat a mint or go wash your mouth afterwards, right?

That was such a bad intro.

I love healing foods and snacks. Take this hummus for instance. Your mouth will reek of garlic when you’re done, but you’ll be so satisfied you won’t even care you’re mouth’s on fire.

When I was still living in the DC area, I used to entertain about 3 times a month. A good friend and her husband were my serious food buddies. After church, we’d get together at someone’s house and tear food apart for hours, until the sun set. I was always eager to bring something, Latin or not. On other occasions, I’d have M & P over for Sex and the City recaps. I kind of wanted Carrie Bradshaw’s extravagant life, sans the wreckless sex. I think she had over 30 partners in the 6 years on air.

That’s disgusting!

Anyway, M used to make the best salmon cakes ever!

But I’m here now, all alone and don’t have much of a reason to entertain in my home. Hell, I can barely entertain myself, let alone invite people over. No TV in my living room, by the way. Plus if I host a dinner party, greedy people like to show up empty handed, and quite frankly, that’s tacky and gets on my nerves.

As I sat at my computer today, thinking about what I’m going to wear for the Emeril taping (and talking myself out of eating for a week), I got hungry. I’ve been staying away from bread, dairy, rice and ice cream, but I needed something to satisfy me.

Few things do these days.

So, I threw on some booty shorts, a Brooklyn zip-up hoodie, shell toe adidas’ and drove to Publix to pick up garbanzo beans. I almost forgot to get lemons, but I was in the produce section long enough to remember. I had to walk over to the bakery and ask if they had fresh Cuban bread; French was ready but not Cuban. Drats. Went to the bread aisle but had a vision of looking 20 pounds overweight on TV so I dashed back to the produce and got celery instead.

Geisha (whose new middle name is DIOR!!) was in the car bearing the 80 degree weather, so I was quick.

I was panting by the time I got home. Separated my ingredients and got to blending.

This recipe is so easy, really fast and damn good. I won’t tell you how healthy it is because if it had 300 calories, it’d still be worth it! Make it for a snack, serve it as an appetizer at your dinner parties or even add it to your favorite sandwich as a spread! Not once has it failed me in pleasing my guests. Even the geeky members of the string quartet I recently quit, loved my humus. I make a variety of other hummus’ that I’ll share over time.

Once taping is over, I’ll be eating hummus with pita bread or chips again. I like celery and all but prefer the starchy stuff! 🙂

Sitting here writing inspired me to go for the crazy and get the shoes I decided to wear for Emeril! Ergo, I am healed from the mental agony of “do I buy, do I eat, do I buy, do I eat!!!” Zappos was totally sold out, Nordstrom too, but they special ordered them for overnight delivery!! Eat your heart out Diane! This is for you, girl!

Garlic-Infused Hummus

Ingredients:

  • 1 can GOYA Garbanzo beans (chick peas), drained in part
  • 1/4 virgin olive oil
  • 1/2 squeezed lemon
  • 1 tbsp. oregano
  • 1.5 tbsp. cumin
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced*

Method:

Add can of garbanzo beans to blender. Squeeze lemon and add all other ingredients. Blend on high/fast speed for about 3 minutes or until completely smooth. If mixture is still a bit too chunky, add a bit more olive oil or juice for can of beans. Garnish with a drop of olive oil, fresh oregano or roasted garlic

Serve with celery sticks, pita tips, chips or spread on your favorite sandwich. Refrigerate and keep for 3 days, tops. Serves 8.

* if you want a more smoky flavor, lightly brown garlic in olive oil on high heat. Substitute for raw garlic.

  1. First of all , I looove hummus too with celery. You shouldn’t have told me that it’s only 300 calories…I’ll eat 3 portions now!
I LOVE THE SHOES!!!! L.A.M.B shoes are sooo pretty and the stitching on these are just dynamite! The detail even does down to the heel. With these colors, you can wear them with just about anything!
I know these will cost ya a pretty penny, but why can’t a girl eat and look good at the same time? Thanks for showing me these, I’m drooling over them. I won’t be jealous if you can just tell me….please…that you are a size 8.5 wide. Please, please tell me that’s your shoe size! I would love to inherit these one day when you have your own TV show and you move up to the $1,000 Jimmy Choo’s. Is it tacky for me to me mentioning this right now? I don’t get embarrassed very easily , as you can probably already tell.
In the meantime, I’m gonna run down to the swap meet and Ross (fits my budget) to see if there’s a knockoff for under $20. Maybe after my appearance on these two upcoming food shows (shh!!! It’s a secret I’m keeping till next month), someone will send me some nice shoes to wear! One thing for sure though, I won’t be wearing any booty shorts on this show. My “thunder thighs” might scare everyone to turn off the TV!

  2. O hush – you look great and you’ll BE great on Emeril! Squeee!!!

Its’s funny you started your post the way you did – I had to promise not to have garlic hummus for lunch – my husband couldn’t take it! (I sneak it sometimes, but he always catches me!)

  3. Can’t go wrong with hummus, the only problem I have with really garlicky hummus is that if left overnight, the garlic can become overpowering in the next few days. All this talk of hummus and booty shorts is making me hungry, I’m gonna go grab a spoon and a jar of you know what.

    The Peanut Butter Boy

  4. Ok – you didn’t get the rasta version of those shoes. I thought I read somewhere that L.A.M.B. shoes were on sale. If you purchase online – make sure to do it so you get cashback. Or, def. hook up with a stylist to see if they will offer them on loan.

Are you prepped for the show taping? I’m SO excited for ya!

  5. Congrats on being on Emeril. How exciting. And yes its rather gross when you think about all the Sex and the City Partners.I know its TV, but I know some chicks like that. Anyway your Hummus looks fab.

  6. Yumm. I could eat a whole bowl of hummus. Your intro cracked me up, I can think of a number of times I started off a post then deleted it and started over. I’ll have to remember the strike-through idea next time that happens.

  7. Hummus is so cool to have around the house! I like to dip just about any veggie in it … sliced bell peppers, cauliflower, broccoli, cucumber slices … I’ll even top it with chopped tomatoes and eat it with a fork!

You were in a string quartet? Got any recordings?? My 13-year-old daughter (who would love those shoes … but I don’t let her wear booty shorts!) has been playing violin since she was 8, and just loves it. So I guess the question is, are you going to keep playing as a hobby?

  8. I’m definitely a garlic-fan, so that hummus is calling out my name!

I ADORE shoes – I own quite a few pairs, haha!

By the way, I saw your comment on my blog – the only other flavor of that raw chocolate spread that’s available is a chocolate-coconut spread. Maybe they’ll have a hazelnut one soon!

  9. With all the talk on other blogs of garlic being one of the big cabcer fighting foods, the more the merrier. As long as the one you are kissing is eating the same thing go for it in this delicious hummus:D

  10. Now I have no one, she says! Oh excuse us Roswell locals why don’t ya. You know, despite the fact that you are from DC, so is my best friend, I won’t hold that against you. But to think that all of us foodies come to dinner parties empty handed like it were some kind of basement-after-church function is just not fair!

Hummus with more garlic, I suggest, is THE most portable dish for a Chastain Jazz outing, wouldn’t you agree?

I am still waiting to buy you lunch by the way. I need to get my pix of you with me before you get all famous and what not. 🙂

  11. Wow, pretty fancy shoes there! You could pull those off- I couldn’t!

There’s a Lebanese restaurant in town that serves garlic dip- it’s very much a hummus type dip with TONS of garlic. It’s the best ever, but you better not have any business meetings the next couple of days if you eat it!!

  12. Diane: the shoes are for you! Same size and all! Since they were so pricey, I’m going to have to get a cheaper apron (i hate wearing them). Hmmm, do you think TJ Maxx or Marshalls may have one?

Katie B: girl, go kiss your husband after all that garlic. He’ll love you for it. Consider it a bonding moment! 🙂 We should catch up while I’m up there.

Nick: You’re so right…I’m trying to figure out a way to overcome that. Maybe a bit more olive oil the next day? I’ll let you know.

Lys: now you know ATL is so behind, they wouldn’t know what to do with those rasta shoes! lol

Courtney: Well the movie is coming out so finally, she’s settling down!!?? And then we wonder why young girls are getting pregnant! Well duh!

Marc: I’m so bad. I kind of liked it at first, but then after publishing it and reading it, it didn’t sound so attractive. Atleast the hummus was!! 🙂 Thanks for stopping by!

LPC: I’m going to email you, but yes, I still play and really try to incorporate it into my vocal recordings. Make sure you keep her playing it. She’ll appreciate it when she’s my age!

VeggieGirl: Shoes are hot. Hummus is smokin’. What more can we ask for?? Thanks for the chocolate tip. I’ll be on the look out this week.

Bellini Valli: Garlicky kisses are sexy, aren’t they?:)

Kevin: All day long, baby! SO easy.. and healthy.

Donald: The question is when are YOU taking me out to lunch? I’ll give you my auto now since you asked. Oh please, this is big for me know. Chastain? Perfect! How come I didn’t think about that. I’m about to email you!

    Bleeding Espresso: Hummus rocks!

Cynthia: Are the shoes hot or what? DLH should be knocking within the hour!! I’ll let you know how taping goes. Thanks for your kindness!

RecipeGirl: I know right..and yes you could! I’m trying to revolutionize the way we work it in the kitchen!! Thanks for reminding me of a Lebanese resto in DC I love to visit. It’s been too long. And as for the breath: travel size mouthwash!! LOL!

  13. I think I’ve eaten hummus twice, if that. I’m going to try this as I’ve cut fast food out of my diet and need some variety. 🙂
