Purple, Hats, & a Sister: Stylish Biking in the City

I have forever been the butt of jokes amongst my siblings. From my jarring lack of sense of humor to my fashionable approach to style, which they’ve all agreed is just “too much,” to my admittedly ridiculous (but not really) annoyance with less than perfectly clean entrée plates when served at restaurants. Their lack of understanding their arty sister, lends to a plethora of snickers, epic side-eyes and eye-rolls, and downright in-my-face LOLs. My sister is the leader of that agenda, ironically. I used to question it, but instead, I entertain them by standing back and sipping a glass of bubbly. But they don’t get that either. Poor them.

On a breezy spring day in New York, just two weekends ago, three of us and our niece, hopped on rental bikes and hit the town. Only, I didn’t know that was on the itinerary before we left DC.

Hence, this fabulous, urban-chic day look.

And so, yet again, on a day I had every intention on simply doing me, I was rendered the subject of mockery. Because who gets on a branded rental bike, wearing a tailor suit jacket, orange jeans, and a hat?

I do.

I carried on as I normally would, but when the jokes got more intense as I flew by, patting down my hat (it had flown off twice by then), I just handed it them. Really, my  sister. In my best Mary Taylor Moore demeanor, I posed all the way from the Financial District to Central Park, peddling away into happy oblivion, as she trolled behind me and took pictures.

I was wearing my Alma Mater’s school colours, like a boss! The joke was on me after all. That’s what sisters (and brothers) are for.

When in NYC, wear something fabulous, always, and rent a bike!
