{Beauty Bloom} Spring’s Beauty To Love, Part I

BSC Spring 2016 Makeup Collage2Lord, will Spring arrive already? Between a random and untimely snow dusting, seeding 1.5″ on my deck last Saturday and crazy winds (with 61F temps) almost knocking me off my bike earlier this week, I’m wondering if Winter is mad she was mildly tempered this year and needing to hold hostage our Spring lover? I love winter but just over the flaky appearances; especially since just last week I was basking in the glorious and abundant sunshine the Dominican Republic has to share with us northerners.

In anticipation of a proper solstice, there are few things we can do now to invoke the joy of a new season. With all its promises of newness and refreshing after harshness settled, Spring trends in beauty, makeup, food, travel, and fashion are the best elements to experience the season. At least in theory we can take advantage with or without the weather’s cooperation.

I’ve explored Spring food trends in a live cooking demo I did on CBS in my hometown of DC just a few weeks ago. Spotting travel trends is always on my agenda and never reduced to seasons. So now I’m shifting to belleza and makeup… leaving fashion for the very last since I tend to lose my mind and have difficutly in measuring my budget when it comes to adorning my entire body and feet.

I’m still digging through piles of makeup and essential beauty products I’ve been collecting since February, but these are ones that caught my immediate attention.  Most are new, some are timeless, like the Urban Decay ‘Perversions’ mascara — and all are incredibly suiting for dolling up your face in lieu of natural sun lacing our periphery.

For the Face (para el cutis)

Check out Bobbi Brown‘s bronzing powder and sexy eye shadow palette in Beach Glow Sunkissed Pink, both from her new Beach Nudes spring collection. I try not to travel with my fancier makeup but this little quad is too pretty to pass up when landing in a duller place. The bronzer is perfect for adding some ambiance to your face… until the sun hits it! Comes in two colours: Stonestreet, and the new Elvis Duran (pictured), Golden Light. Both are on counters now for a standard $42.

Use the Laura Mericer bronzer brush to apply.

L’Oreal never goes wrong, I swear. I’m their junkie of epic proportions. This is my IT tube right here… the Truematch LUMI liquid glow illuminator in Rose. Love.this.stuff. Wore it every day while in the DR to much compliment on my skin–which is still in repair mode. It gives your skin a super natural glow and smooth effect. Not heavy, not greasy, not shiny… a perfect balance of glow, matte, and highlight. Try it. There’s not much more I can say on it. It’s that perfect.

Circa Magic Hour Illuminating Glow actually came out last year as part of Eva Mendes‘ wildly affordable makeup line, but it’s another little tube I’ve been swearing by. I picked up the LUMI when I thought I lost this one; turns out it fell under my car seat and planted itself there for 3 months. It’s the the one thing I don’t take out of my makeup bag. Long nights, early mornings beg for a bit of help in the eye area. A dab of this brings dark circles to life and brightens up any sulkiness. Trust I’ve been living that life for that past 5 months. This is my glam pick me up when I don’t have time or energy to wear proper makeup.

FOR EYES (para los ojos)

BSC Spring 2016 Makeup Mascara

Life is not the same without mascara. Period. A diversion: anyone in my tight circle knows I’m an evangelist for L’Oreal’s Truematch undereye crayon. Second to their Voluminous mascara which I’ve been using since it debuted over a decade ago, that crazy is my bae. I may deserve its own post, hence no real reference here. Just know it’s what you need in your life. But these mascaras are what you need to consider.

L’Oreal‘s new spring and summer pickings include this Superstar Red Carpet Black stick from the Voluminous line that will put a rest to the stale gray stick I defer to. I’m not sure how much better their mascaras can get? Where does the testing and technology stop?! Word! Their Magna is good, too, but it’s from last year so it’s not featured here but does deserve a mention. Reserve this one for your uber chic outings with your man or your best girlfriends that’ll beg for your “lash” brand.

If I had to cheat on L’Oreal, it’d be with Urban Decay‘s Perversion. I have to say I actually like it better than Voluminous, but it’s not as accessible at $22 and at specially makeup stores. With its long-lasting, super creamy, and rounded brush, it makes more some seriously dramatic lashes. It’s not new, per se, but worth picking up as it keeps making the beauty rounds on the larger beauty sites and edtiors’ picks. This is my 3rd tube and this one’s empty so I use it for a quick brushing on my eyebrows.

And, Estée Lauder just came out with the Sumptuous Knockout wand with is great for lifting and fanning out your lashes. I’ve not used it enough to love it like the two aforementioned but it’s a really beautiful option for nighttime. Lauder in general makes really great mascaras — one I work out for more than 6 months, which is a faux pas, but it was that gud… check it here.

FOR THE LIPS (para los labios)

We can all go crazy with lip option. Gloss, mattes, hydrators, glitter sticks, all day wear and the list goes on. These here take care of everything for spring flingling.

BSC Spring 2016 Makeup Lips

Bobbi Brown‘s Art Sticks are becoming a cult classic. Love these massive crayons the most. I misplace them all the time and have to restash more often than I need to be. At $28, you don’t want loose these babies. New colours like Hot Berry and Electric Coral form the Malibu Nudes spring collection are lusicous. To date, Dusty Pink is the best shade in the entire lineup, but a girlfriend loved it so much I gave it to her during a lunch tryst.

Clinique‘s new sweet pots and sugar scrubs are trendy and too chic. I love the double duty in providing a good amount of exfoliation and creamy balm. Inspired by my favorite cookie of all time — the decadent macaron — these little pods keep your lips sleek and polished. The sugary scrubs nourishes with avocado and grapeseed oil, shea butter and a few others to leave them nice and rived. The balms have coco oil an shea butter to finish off a smoothened moisturized look and feel. The clouds are nice but don’t look for any kind of pigmentation from them.  $19.50 and on counters now.

L’Oreals’ Infallible collection expands this season with  more electric colours. The Pro Matte glosses are great for gift-giving and for blending with shinier lipsticks. Aphrodite Kiss is a good base or top layer for a lot neutrals.

How great are Lancome’s new and revolutionary Juicy Shakers? I thought I’d seen it all in trendy and avante garde makeup packaging but this tops the cake… at least for now. Don’t let the separated liquids in the stylish tubes fool ya… Shake it up and the infusion gives you a silky brush on your lips. The felt tip like cushiony, brush is gentle and serves as a good sponge to dab the pigment infused oil.  I’m almost out of the peachy one but dying to try the Rose de Muscat shaker. $21 or a variety of colours and shades.

Also check out Estée Lauder‘s Wild Mink gloss from the Pure Envy line of lip wear. I love, love, love, this colour and classy shine it leaves. It’s subtle but there.

And finally, last least for now, is new lip colour crush: Laura Mercier‘s French Kiss. Goodness, this is sheer lip crush. Saw this on Instagram and had to have. I loved it so much I scooped it up the same say I saw it to wear it the following morning on my last TODAY show appearance. It popped so well with the cobalt blue top I wore that late winter morning. It’s the perfect pink hue for any complexion. $25 at Nordstrom.

FOR THE SCENT OF A WOMAN (el purfume)

BSC Spring 2016 Makeup Aerin Perfume opaque

Go for Aerin‘s Mediterranean Honeysuckle, her latest in perfumes. I’ve been obsessed with her Rose de Grasse for a over a year now, but it’s time to give it a break. I’m particularly drawn to it because of the nostalgia it brings me. My neighbors growing up had a really lovely honeysuckle plant that I loved picking from. I was very inquisitive as a chid and find myself intoxicated by the smell so I took it upon myself to see if it tasted as good as it smelled. Sure enough, the honeysuckles are filled with a dewey “honey” that lends to a surprise little “snack” as you walk by and stop to smell them. Try it next time you see a bush. For real.

More of where this came from, from the best to products to travel with, to amazing prods to create an effective spa at home, to hair products making waves for curly hair girls!
