The Best Part of The Super Bowl Halftime Show You May Have Missed

The Super Bowl is arguably the most watched program in all of television history. The halftime show is the one time everyone is watching centerstage whether you get the game or not. And this year did not disappoint. The duo powerhouse collab between international icons, Shakira, hailing from Colombia, and Jennifer Lopez from Puerto Rico, did more than electrify the crowd and have every 40-something and 50-something year-old-woman talking and self-analyzing our bodies. They also, and probably more importantly, used that enormous stage to make a visually powerful statement: that children in cages is not the American way.

J.lo’s daughter, Emme, belted out a slow jam version of her mami’s “Let’s Get Loud” track while standing behind a cage. And just in case you missed it, the field was replete with children in the same circular structures, or cages. The imagery was designed to mimic the tragic family separation policy and subsequent child migration and Mexican border crisis as installed by the current administration.

“Two Latinas doing this at this time in this country — it’s just very empowering for us. For me, I’m very proud to be able to help set and push forth that message.” Jennifer Lopez.

“I think it’s a very important moment for our community, for the Latino community, in this country. And I think the Super Bowl is a very American event, as American as it can get. I think it’s very nice to see that it’s also going to be a reminder of the heritage of this country, which is one of diversity.” Shakira

And Twitter noticed.

And if watching an 11-year-old crush her performance while making a statement that called out a human crises right here, La Lopez cemented the plea by draping herself in the Puerto Rican flag (with the US flag on the flip side) as she covered Bruce Springsteen’s “Born in the USA.”  Because Latinos really do make America great!
