Live! at the Hive, Ep.5: Remembering Kobe Bryant & The Mamba Mentality

Welcome back to Live! at the Hive, episode 5. I took an intentional break during the holidays to live life and really enjoy the season. While the break was much-needed and proved to be just what I needed, I’m so glad to be back on the mic! There’s so much in store for 2020 and while today’s episode deviates a bit from my standard format, I’m excited about upcoming guests and new .

We’re not on this stage just because of talent or ability, we’re up here because of 4 a.m.

We’re up here because of two-a-days or five-a-days.

We’re up here because we had a dream and let nothing stand in our way. If anything tried to bring us down, we used it to make us stronger.

– KOBE BRYANT

INTRO to GUEST, Allen Johnson

My college friend, husband, father, real estate maven, investor, and now author joined me for a very special conversation celebrating the life and legacy of basketball legend, Kobe Bryant and his 13-year old daughter, Gigi.  I specifically wanted to break down Kobe’s well-branded ‘MAMBA MENTALITY‘. To me, Allen personifies that mentality, which has contributed to his success as a business man but importantly as a husband and father. We also explore

SOAPBOXING

HOW DO YOU LIVE THE MAMBA MENTALITY?

I tweaked my signature segment this week and dedicated the conversation to exploring with Allen how we live and practice as entrepreneurs and leaders Kobe’s Mamba mentality. A few key points we celebrate from his iconic way of thinking:

Work harder than everyone else.

Failure has its place.

4 am.

Be present.

Study your work.

Be obsessed with winning.

This week’s Word of the Day was challenging and new to both Allen and me but he got it. Rooted in French, Parvenu:  One that has recently or suddenly risen to an unaccustomed position of wealth or power and has not yet gained the prestige, dignity, or manner associated with it.

CULTURE HUB

A man randomly threw a Super Bowl party for the homeless. 3 years later, he’s hosting 15 across the US. I can’t tell you how much I love this story! Impact and service start right where you are.

Akon created his own city in Senegal called ‘Akon City’. I mean, hello! That’s boss on a whole other level.
Akon, who is of Senegalese descent, originally announced plans for the futuristic “Crypto city” in 2018 saying that the city would be built on a 2,000-acre land gifted to him by the President of Senegal, Macky Sall. The new city would also trade exclusively in his own digital cash currency called AKoin, he said.

WISHLIST

This week’s Wishlist is lacking some funny, at least mine was. I was a bit on the philosophical tip while Allen shared some very tangible items on his list.
