The #OscarsSoWhite Moment You May Have Missed

It’s true. The Oscars  (are) So white. Not just in the lilly white crowd-looking-their best, but in production and editing and screenwriting and directing and stage performance, and costuming, and funding. Ava Duvernay — who dominates Black Twitter and calls out moments of injustice on all fronts — used the evening to point out there are so many openings available that are not employed by non-white talent.

So when Janelle Monáe opened up the 92nd annual awards show, it was quite apropos she took the stage to belt out a remix version of her decades-old song ‘Come Alive’, with lyrical changes highlighting categorial snubs. More notably, she made a subtle but loud statement: Oscars So White. Hugged between synchronized dancing and powerful vocals, she let everyone know that the only way to ‘Come Alive’ was in fact to be inclusive.

Brava, lady! We’re for more of you!
