Sad, Sad Day in Soul Music.

(Ike & me New Year’s Eve ’06)

Soul Icon and Oscar winner Isaac Hayes died today in his Memphis, TN home at the tender age of 65. I’m particularly sad because his son Isaac Hayes, III also known as “Ike Dirty” is a really good friend of mine.

We spend a good amount of time together and through him I’ve gotten to know a lot about his dad. What a pioneer of music. If you don’t know who Isaac Hayes, you should do some reading on him.

Anyway, a disagreement with Ike earlier this month comes to mind and I’m reminded that no matter what happens between you and the people you love, you should never go to bed upset. In the greater scheme of things, our differences and expectations can be so trivial. My affection for Ike is reaffirmed.

I’ll be away from blogging this week as I’ll be super busy with tending to some things, and preparing to travel out of the country. However, I’m going to visit with Ike tonight and plan on taking him food. If any of you have any suggestions on what I could feed him all week, that’d be great. He’ll be thankful!

Read about Isaac Hayes’s homegoing here.

RIP, Isaac.

  1. Sorry to hear that, B – my condolences. You’re absolutely right about maintaining a positive relationship between the people you love. Hm.. perhaps you should make him something bright white to represent your friendship? maybe a panna cotta or even a pavlova (although this has berries on top).

  2. You are a good friend. I’m sure he will appreciate anything you bring as food is really the last thing on the mind with death, but so much appreciated when they see it in front of them. Maybe some of that flan? Between Bernie Mac and now Issace Hayes… we are losing some great talent.

  3. B,
Im so sorry to hear about your friend passing.  You are in my thoughts and prayers as you minister to his son and your friend Isaac.
Im sure what ever you fix for food, will be much appreciated.  Take care and  I hope all goes well.
    Michelle

  4. Bren, it is indeed a very sad week.  I was still in shock over Bernie Mac when the news about Isaac Hayes came through.  Please send your friend my sympathies.  His dad was a wonder.  And I’d echo the others that it’s your heart that will come through.

  5. My sincerest condolences to Ike and his family. Having lost some several loved ones myself this year, I know that he will need all the love and support he can get.  RIP Isaac Hayes.  We’ve lost quite a legend.

  6. Hey Bren.  Sorry to hear about your friend’s sudden loss of his father.  I know from personal experience how unbelievably devastating that is.
As for food, I would say make him anything he doesn’t have to give any thought to.  Stuff he can grab and heat or grab and eat since contemplating cooking and food will likely be one of the last things on his mind.

  7. HI everyone: On behalf of Ike, we thank you for your kind words, expressions and sympathies. The family is now getting ready to go to TN for the funeral. They are truly touched by the kindness of strangers, knowing their father touched so many lives in such a great way.

Oh and I ended up making pollo en fricasse, picadillo, black beans and rice. I’m glad to report they ate it all in one day!! And I made enough to feed 8!!! 🙂 Thanks for all the suggestions!

  8. Bren, thank you for sharing your kind words – i’m IKE’s pubicist and pulling info to compile for him.  I know he appreciates you so.  Be safe in your travels and hope to meet you soon.

  9. 128599 263948Youre so correct. Im there with you. Your weblog is surely worth a read if anyone comes throughout it. Im lucky I did because now Ive obtained a complete new view of this. I didnt realise that this issue was so essential and so universal. You totally put it in perspective for me. 716364
