Live! at the Hive, Ep. 6: The Over-Policing of Brown & Black Women’s Bodies + Gayle King Fiasco

Welcome back to Live! at the Hive, episode 6. I’m so excited you guys decided to join us once again. I can’t believe I’m already at episode six. 4.

My opening thought for the day is pretty straightforward. The episode explains all of that.

You hurt yourself the most when you cut off your nose to spite your face, when you act stubbornly, when you pretend to be ‘ok’ with losing the ones you care about and love, because your pride is worth more to you.

If this were your last day on earth, would it be worth it?

INTRO to GUEST, JULIA CARIAS-LINARES

Today’s episode is a new kind as my guest is calling in from New York. Welcome my friend, colleague and all-around a bad ass rockstar, Julia Carias-Linares. Julia is a former TV executive at A&E Network where managed and developed programming for FYI and others. She is now A film producer, director and actress. She also has her own real estate staging company, JCL staging.

I brought Julia on for plenty of reasons, namely that she is a Latina in media and entertainment and is the perfect person to join me for today’s episode!

SOAPBOXING

While the Super Bowl happened three weeks ago already, the concept of body shaming and women owning our power but also being objectified, sexualized and hated on by other women, we still have an obligation to push the conversation forward. Julie and I discussed J. Lo and Shakira‘s halftime show. Was it too sexual? Did that pole really need to be there? What about the fact they are 43 and 50 years old, respectively, and are crushing it? We get into all of that but also explore the idea that women tend to criticize and hate on other women when they are wildly successful and doing the thing.

We also talk about Gayle King and that fiasco. Was she wrong for asking Lisa Leslie questions about Kobe‘s past? Did she violate the culture code?

Word of the Day. Too funny.

WISHLIST

Today’s wishlist is a simple one. I’m all over the place. I wish I could hoop! And a couple of other things. I also encourage the audience to spend more time with our elders. Julia also shares wishlist.

CULTURE HUB

In today’s Culture Hub, we look at three different stories that have impact. Did you see “Who Killed Malcolm X” on Netflix? If not, you need to check it out. We talk about the impact it has had on the FBI and the NYPD re-opening the original case.

Morehouse has a polo club?! What!! We’re here for this! We also celebrate an icon Mexican actor, Roberto Gómez Bolaños, who would have turned 93 last week. A comedian I grew up watching as a little girl.

FINAL THOUGHTS

And finally, I was at the show with a thought by Rumi.

THE THREE GATES

Before you speak, let your words pass through three gates:

At the first gate, ask yourself, “Is it true?”

At the second gate ask, “Is it necessary?”

At the third gate ask, “Is it kind?”
